Top 10 Places to Eat Like Locals in San Antonio

eat where the locals eat around San antonio

Headed to San Antonio?? Avoid the mediocre tourist traps and eat where the locals eat! Below are 10 of my favs! Ciao!

PS: Although there are a few good restaurants on the Riverwalk, most are overpriced and just meh! So if you want to people watch on the Riverwalk, opt for a beer or cocktail and save dinner for later.

1. The Cove

The Cove is one of my favorites! I hit this place up often when I taught nursing school. It has a great vibe and delicious, organic local food. My favorite is the fish tacos! But everything is good. Be sure to check their calendar for live music. They are pet friendly and have a play area for the kiddos! It’s a casual place with reasonable prices.

2. Sanchos

Want a cool vibe and a delicious margarita? This is the place! As a side for the marg you can order desicious, made from scratch mexican dishes. This place is dog friendly and has live music most days of the week.

3. Bar Loretta’s

Headed to the King William neighborhood? Hit up this place for proper cocktails and elevated, modern Texas cuisine. The chefs at Loretta are amazing! You will not be disappointed! I popped in just last weekend with my girlfriends for cocktails and appetizers. Scrumptious! It will get crowded on the weekend so reservations are recommended.

4. The friendly spot

Grab your friends and head to this place! It is casual, fun, and full of locals. The food is good and the drinks are spot on (see what I did there)! They are puppy friendly too!

5. Little Em’s Oyster Bar

This cute little place is located in the heart of the King William district. I popped in this place again during my girls weekend! It is amazing. The oysters are fresh and they sometimes run out by the end of the night. They also get really busy on the weekends so a reservation is a good idea. The tuna tartar will melt in your mouth! Mmmmm!

6. Tre Trattoria

Hidden inside the San Antonio Museum of Art is an eatery you will want to visit even if art is not your thing! You don’t have to buy tickets to the museum to enjoy the restaurant. It sits along a quiet section of the riverwalk offering nice views and outside seating. I can vouch for the beets! They are divine and I typically don’t even like beets.

7. La Panadería

My mouth is watering just thinking about this place! This beautiful coffee shop has some of the best artisan baked goods in town! The sweets and dessert breads are delicious but don’t think of this place just for coffee and dessert. They have the best breakfast sandwiches, deli sandwiches and avocado toast all using their fresh baked bread! I love everything but my go to is the avocado toast and cappuccino! Not a sammich person?? Check out one of their fresh salads.

They have two locations to choose from and don’t be surprised if the line is out the door! If you are going for breakfast the earlier the better!

8. Down on Grayson

This is another place I frequented when I worked downtown. It is located on the outskirts of the Pearl. This historic district has been revitalized into a hip community surrounded by great food and shops along the riverwalk. Don’t tell anyone, but I have probably sampled the entire Down on Grayson menu! I love this place!

The restaurant has a wall of windows so it is bright and airy. The outdoor seating area is casual and pet friendly. Many of the locals walk here for a meal or drinks with Fido in tow! You will find a casual, friendly atmosphere with food that is not so casual! Oh, and of course, the cocktails are top-notch!

So much to do in the San Antonio Area!

9. Camp outpost Co

You will be surprised that I have another chill, laid back eatery on the list! Think of this place as campfire food on an epic scale! Get ready for woodfired comfort food! Choose from mouth watering rotisserie chicken, sandwiches and more.

10 Biga

It is time to up our game and this is the place! It is located on the Riverwalk but is far from a tourist trap. The chef changes the menu daily based on what is in season while keeping a few of the more popular staples! The fried oysters are epic and the steak will melt in your mouth! When it comes to dessert do not skip it. That would be a Big-a mistake! (Sorry, I couldn’t resist). The sticky toffee pudding is not just award-winning, its heavenly! Not a surprise as the chef is a native North Londoner. Having trouble deciding? Go for the trio. Yes, I am drooling again!
