Why You Should Ride the Tide on the Shubie River
The Shubenacadie River, known as the “River of Fire,” is one of the few tidal bore rivers in the world. The tidal bore, created by powerful tidal waves, moves up the river and creates the highest tide in the world! It is a spectacle to watch.
However, it is not just a sightseeing activity. The river provides the opportunity to ride the highest tide in the world—and maybe the highest tide ever recorded! It rises up to 53 feet twice a day, creating a wave of around 8 to 12 feet.
Today, we share our top five reasons why you should RIDE THE TIDE on the Shubie River.
5 reasons to ride the tide
1. Thrilling Experience
Riding the tide in the Shubie River is a one-of-a-kind experience. Here, you can ride one of the largest tidal bore tides in the world. This unique phenomenon happens when the incoming tide creates a wave that travels up the river against the direction of the current. Riding the tide is a thrilling adventure you will never forget.

You can unleash your inner child and have some serious muddy fun! Experience the joy of playing in the mud like you did as a kid. Everyone can try out the mudslide before the tide comes in. Talk about throwing caution to the wind!
3. Excellent Guides
Safety is paramount when it comes to adventure activities. You are provided with a qualified guide who is experienced in navigating the river. They will give you the proper equipment and explain the techniques to ride the tide safely. The guides will ensure that you have the best experience and stay secure.
4. the kids will love it
Riding the tide might sound extreme, but it's suitable for all ages. Children and grandparents alike can enjoy the adventure. The only requirement is to weigh at least 50 pounds. It's a great family activity that everyone will enjoy. What kid doesn't want to see their Mom and Dad playing in the mud?
5. you will have fun
Every now and then, it’s nice to step outside your comfort zone and do something out of the ordinary—something that gets the heart pumping but is also fun. This is one of those adventures. We laughed the entire day! And the best part is that we are still talking about it. We created the best memories on the Shubie River!
To experience the tidal bore firsthand, head to Green Oaks, Nova Scotia, a small town located about an hour outside Halifax. Here, you can hop on a raft with one of several ride-the-tide companies. We chose Shubie River Wranglers, and they did a great job! Our boat captain was fun, knowledgeable, and, most importantly, skilled!
The best time to catch the tidal bore is during a full or new moon when the tidal range is at its highest. This occurs twice a month and can be easily tracked using online tide charts. The tour time will change daily based on the tides.
