Surprise Roadside Attraction: The Berlin Wall

If you're looking to spice up your next road trip with a little bit of fun, you should definitely consider taking a detour to one of the many roadside attractions out there. From crazy sculptures and funky museums to unique pieces of architecture, these quirky stops can make for some unforgettable memories - plus they make great Instagram posts!

You can choose from a giant roadrunner made from trash or cars buried in the ground to replicate stonehenge for your photo ops or fun pieces like the an upcycled troll named Isak the options are wide-open. There is nothing like a cool roadside attraction!

Today, we are sharing a roadside attraction that once dominated world news: The Berlin Wall. Although the 96 mile long wall has since been dismantled (in 1989), its remnants stand across the globe as a reminder of what that concrete wall represented. As a matter of fact you can find this pieces of this Cold War relic all across the US.

We discovered these three panels while walking along Long Wharf in Portland, Maine. We didn’t believe it was the real deal so we grabbed our phones to start the research. Sure enough. We were looking at a section of the actual Berlin Wall!

 
 

Germany has replaced the wall that divided Europe with bricks and plaques to mark where the Berlin Wall once stood. Someday, I hope to see a few of these plaques for myself. In the meantime we will try to run into a few more slabs of Berlin concrete.

 
 

Berlin Wall Across the Us

You can find pieces of the Wall all across the country. Here are a few of the more unique pieces.

  • The longest piece of the wall outside of Germany can be found at the Wende Museum in Los Angeles, CA.

  • The strangest location you will find a piece of the wall is behind a toilet in the mens room at the Main Street Casino, Brewery & Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

  • You will find a piece under five horses bolting to freedom at the George Bush Presidential Library in Texas.
