Ebikes are an absolute game-changer for RVers, travelers, and adventure seekers. They let you ride farther, tackle hills effortlessly, and make getting around a whole lot more fun. But there’s one thing you CANNOT ignore: battery safety.

Lithium-ion batteries—like the ones in ebikes—can be dangerous if not handled properly. Fires, explosions, and overheating incidents are real risks, and they can turn your fun ride into a serious disaster. Before you hit the road (or the trails), let's talk about how to prevent an ebike battery fire and what to look for when choosing the right ride.

Ebike Batteries: The Hidden Danger

You’ve probably heard horror stories of lithium-ion batteries exploding or catching fire—unfortunately, it happens. Here’s why:

  • Overcharging can cause batteries to overheat and ignite

  • Using the wrong charger can cause malfunctions

  • Charging near flammable objects? Bad idea

  • Damaged or low-quality batteries can be ticking time bombs

How to Prevent Ebike Battery Fires

  • Use the Manufacturer-Approved Charger – No off-brand chargers! Stick with the one made for your bike.

  • Never Leave It Charging Unattended – Fires often start when batteries are left plugged in too long. Set a timer to check it.

  • Unplug It When Fully Charged – Overcharging leads to overheating. As soon as it’s full, unplug it.

  • Charge in a Safe Place – Keep it away from anything flammable like curtains, bedding, or paper.

  • Inspect Your Battery Regularly – If it’s swollen, leaking, or damaged in any way, STOP USING IT IMMEDIATELY.

  • Don’t Store It in Extreme Heat – Keeping your bike (or just the battery) in a hot car or direct sun can be dangerous.

  • Avoid Cheap, Unregulated Batteries – If you need a replacement, only buy from reputable brands.

Bottom Line? Treat your ebike battery like a small gas tank—handle it with care, and it’ll take you where you need to go safely.

What Ebikes Do We Ride?

Now that we’ve covered the essential safety tips for all ebikes, let’s dive into the ones we ride. We’ve been rolling with Lectric bikes since 2019, and to say we’re fans would be an understatement! Over the years, Lectric has genuinely listened to their customers, making improvements with every new model—and we’ve had the chance to test out nearly all of them.

But what makes Lectric stand out isn’t just their awesome bikes—it’s the people behind them. Whenever we reach out for support with our veteran fundraisers, their answer is a resounding “YES!” No hesitation, just, “What do you need?” They’ve donated $10,000 and six bikes to support our veterans. That kind of generosity speaks volumes. So, massive shoutout to Lectric—thank you for making great ebikes and making a difference!

Currently, we have the Lectric XP 3.0s. But we have owned and tested a few other models and can’t wait to test the new XP 4.0. Below are a few details about those e-bikes, including our pros and cons.

Lectric XP Lite

BIKE DETAILS

  • Max load 225 lbs

  • Range is up to 80 miles

  • Top speed 20 mph

PROS

  • The light weight makes it much easier to load onto bike racks and into the back of cars when compared to larger ebikes.

  • More portable

  • Multiple fun colors

  • Great for paved roads

  • Great fit for shorter riders

Cons

  • Not suited for gravel or sand as the smaller tires do not have the traction of the fatter tires and may skid.

  • The lack of fenders means you are getting dirty if it’s wet out.

  • No gears, so hills will be more of a challenge for those wanting to pedal more and use the assist less.

Lectric Xp trike

At one of our Someday Crew events, we had the chance to raffle off a Lectric XP Trike—and it couldn’t have found a better home! This trike is a game-changer for anyone with balance challenges, a sturdy design, a top speed of 14 mph, and an impressive 450-lb weight capacity—all while weighing just 68 lbs.

The best part? It was perfect for Jack! Ever since he won the trike, he’s been cruising all over the place, finally able to keep up with his wife, Dee. We love seeing how the right gear can make such a big difference in someone’s adventures!

Lectric XPremium

If you watch the video above, you will see that we talk about this model. Unfortunately, it was discontinued. It was fun while it lasted!

Where Can You Ride an Ebike?

Not all bike paths and trails allow ebikes, and rules vary by state, and they can also vary between cities and types of land. Some areas allow certain classes of eBikes on sidewalks, while others allow road riding only. Trail rules vary based on the specific trail.

Before you pack up your ebike for a ride, check the local legislation, city, or specific trail to ensure you are clear to ride. One city trail we rode our mountain bikes on had a $1000 fine for anything motorized, including ebikes and skateboards.

The links below may help as you travel to the national parks and BLM land.

We’ve added a few upgrades to make our rides even better:

Understanding Ebike Classes

Not all classes are allowed on all bike paths! Know before you go!

  • Class 1 – Pedal assist only (max 20 mph)

  • Class 2 – Pedal assist + throttle (max 20 mph for both functions)

  • Class 3 – Pedal assist + throttle (max speed of 28 mph for pedal assist and max speed of 20 mph for throttle)

Check your area for specific class restrictions, which may vary based on class.

Before Buying an Ebike

Before you invest in an ebike, ask yourself:

  • Battery life – Will it last on long rides? How far do you plan to ride?

  • Motor power – Can it handle your weight + cargo?

  • Weight – Some are 80 lbs! Can you lift it onto a rack or into the back of a vehicle?

  • Foldability – Where will you store the ebike? Do you need it to fit in an RV compartment?

  • Price – Costs range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars

  • Test Ride One First! – Rent an ebike, take a showroom test ride, or try a friend’s before buying

Stay Safe & Ride Smart!

Ebikes are fantastic, but safety comes first—especially with battery care. Follow the charging tips above, invest in a quality ebike, and you’ll have miles of fun without the risk of a fire hazard.
